Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is not getting too excited about polling showing Labor in front of the government for the first time since Malcolm Turnbull became prime minister.

But he did tell reporters in Perth the hard work of his united team is now bearing some fruit, after the latest Newspoll showed the ALP ahead of the coalition 51-49 per cent after preferences.

"I will keep calm about polls," he said on Tuesday.
