Shorten praises loyal Labor team

Labor leader Bill Shorten has praised his team's loyalty as questions continue over whether his leadership will be safe following Saturday's by-elections.

Bill Shorten says he's happy with how his "loyal" team is campaigning ahead of Saturday's by-elections, despite questions about his leadership.

The Labor leader rejected suggestions his leadership will be in trouble if he loses in Braddon and Longman, less than a year out from the next federal election.

Labor frontbenchers Anthony Albanese and Catherine King have been appearing regularly in the media and on the campaign trail.

"I'm really pleased that Anthony is out campaigning in Longman," Mr Shorten told reporters in Tasmania on Thursday.

"I've got Catherine King here just slaying them in the aisles when it comes to health policy.

"I'm going to say this about Anthony and all my team: they're loyal, they're working hard for Labor."

Mr Shorten was asked if he accepted his leadership is "cooked" if he lost in Tasmania's Braddon and Queensland's Longman and he replied: "No, I don't. But what I also accept is the voters haven't voted yet."

Asked whether he could guarantee he would not challenge for the leadership, Mr Albanese said in Longman on Thursday: "Absolutely."

"The only thing I'm interested in is being a minister in the Labor government - it will be led by Bill Shorten," Mr Albanese said.

"Labor is not talking about internals, what we are talking about is defeating the Turnbull government."

Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne said Labor disunity was playing out in Longman.

"People don't know if they vote for Susan Lamb (Labor candidate) whether they're going to get Bill Shorten or they're going to get Anthony Albanese (as leader)," he said.

Labor is expected to hold Perth and Fremantle, but the Braddon and Longman elections are too close to call.

No opposition has lost a by-election to the government since 1920.
