Bill Shorten has proposed an extension of Sir Peter Cosgrove's term as Governor-General in the wake of growing speculation about Julie Bishop's next move.

Following Ms Bishop stepping down as foreign minister on Sunday, reports suggests she could succeed Sir Peter when his commission ends in March.

But the Labor leader has written a letter to new Prime Minister Scott Morrison asking to extend Sir Peter's commission for another six months, until September 2019.
