Bill Shorten should stay on as Labor leader even if he loses on Saturday, Peta Credlin says.

The former chief of staff to prime minister Tony Abbott said Mr Shorten had done well and deserved to stay on.

"If Labor was smart I think they would reward Bill for having done well over the last seven or eight months - and certainly I think logistically he's run a good campaign - and they would keep him there," she told a panel in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Ms Credlin also said she wanted to see Malcolm Turnbull to complete a whole term for the good of the country.

"I know the current prime minister profited from instability to get there, but I think in our country's interest we need a government to hold the term," she said.

Ms Credlin said the electorate and the media needed to let politicians fail.

"On both sides of politics I think people go into it for the right reasons. Now more than ever there's enormous personal scrutiny on politicians," she said.

Ms Credlin said Brexit had some lessons for Australia, but not on immigration, which she said had been thoroughly debated and contested for 20 years.

Instead, she said the lack of wage growth and the ability to keep the budget under control will see Australian governments rise and fall in the next decade.

"You have much more movement across the voting inclinations now than ever before," Ms Credlin said.
