Labor leader Bill Shorten says Stephen Conroy's criticism of the governor-general during a speech in the Senate was out of line.
Senator Conroy invoked the memory of Sir John Kerr and the dismissal of the Whitlam government in 1975 as he attacked Sir Peter Cosgrove over the recall of parliament to consider critical government legislation.
"The remarks were intemperate. They certainly don't reflect the view of the Labor Party," Mr Shorten told ABC radio on Tuesday.
Liberal senator Eric Abetz described Senator Conroy's conduct as one of the most reprehensible acts he's seen in parliament for 22 years.
Mr Shorten should demand a full apology and if it's not forthcoming Senator Conroy should be booted out of the shadow ministry, he said.
