Liberal MP Sarah Henderson should lobby the prime minister directly over wind and solar, says Opposition leader Bill Shorten.

Ms Henderson says she wants to reverse the government's push to stop the Clean Energy Finance Corporation from investing in wind and solar.

Last week The Victorian MP announced she had written to Finance Minister Mathias Cormann asking him to include wind and small scale solar in the corporation's investment mandate.

Writing a letter is one thing but Ms Henderson needs to do more, Mr Shorten said.

"If Sarah Henderson is fair dinkum, she'll take the opportunity while Mr Abbott is in Geelong to make her case directly to him," he said.

If Ms Henderson doesn't stand up to the prime minister during his visit on Thursday, "she is just as backwards on renewable energy and the jobs and investment it brings to Geelong" as him, he said.

Mr Abbott has previously said that while the corporation exists it should be investing in new and emerging technologies, not existing wind farms.

Mr Shorten wants to increase the share of renewable energy to 50 per cent by 2030.
