Shortlist for APRA awards 2018

The 20 finalists up for an APRA award have been announced ahead of the final ceremony in Sydney in April.

Firewood and Candles, Forgot Myself, Isn't it a Pity and Everyday is the Weekend, are just a few of the 20 songs shortlisted for the 2018 APRA awards.

Five finalists from the list announced on Thursday will go to the Song of the Year Voting Academy ahead of the final ceremony in Sydney in April.

Well-established trailblazing artists Tim Rogers, Jen Cloher, and Bernard Fanning are up against powerful newcomers such as Vera Blue, Alex Lahey and Amy Shark.

Paul Kelly is a hot contender with Firewood and Candles sounding like a cosy winter night beside the fire with lyrics telling the story of "wine in the bottles and paella cooking in the pan".

Jessica Mauboy's sweet and sultry song Falllin', from the TV series, The Secret Daughter, paints a picture about falling in love, while Cadillac from All Our Exes Live In Texas sounds like a creepy lyrical spin-off from Stepford Wives.

Perth-based singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly tackles rape culture with her delicately sung acoustic number Boys will be Boys, about confronting a man who raped her friend.

"She told me she blames herself," Donnelly sings, and ends with "I will never let you rest".

Controversially, American artist 6lack is in with their song That Far, tapping into social media culture with "You got some nerve tweetin' from your mama house, ay". Melbourne-based Lucianblomkamp is credited with being in charge of the production and engineering of That Far.
