Two men wounded in a targeted shooting in Sydney's south are not helping with the police investigation as they recover in hospital.
The men - aged 34 and 35 - were about to enter the garage of the younger man's home on Johnstone Street in Peakhurst shortly after 8pm on Wednesday when they were attacked by another two men.
The 34-year-old was shot in the chest, arm, back and buttock during a struggle and his friend was also pistol-whipped before the attackers fled.
It's believed they escaped in a light-coloured sedan.
Acting Superintendent Scott Bingham said both men were known to police and the attack was targeted.
"This is clearly unacceptable," he told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.
"Society doesn't accept these sort of things and we will do everything in our power to find those responsible and bring them to justice."
The 34-year-old man was taken to St George Hospital and will undergo surgery, while his friend requires treatment for a broken arm and suspected broken jaw. Both are under police guard.
Act Supt Bingham said detectives had already tried to speak with the victims.
"They have not supplied us with any information that would progress the investigation at this stage," he said.
A woman believed to be the shot man's mother and two young children - both under 10 - were home at the time, but were unharmed.
Act Supt Bingham said while it was too early to speculate on a motive, detectives would look into the backgrounds and associates of both victims and the involvement of drugs had not been ruled out.
"We don't limit ourselves to one particular motive, but that's certainly something we'll be investigating," he said.
The younger man was "extremely lucky to be alive" and the attackers, who laid in wait for their targets, must have sought to kill, Act Supt Bingham said.
"I'd suggest at this stage the intent is quite clear."
The man's mother says one of the children witnessed the unfolding attack.
"You raise your kids in the best schools to be good people ... I don't know what's happening," she told the Nine Network.
Witnesses said a pair of masked men ran from the scene.
Police are yet to find a weapon and have examined vehicles and neighbouring properties.
The shooting took place less than 100 metres from a primary school and comes after two other men were shot in the legs in separate attacks in Sydney's northwest and southwest on Tuesday night.
