His comments coincide with an Australian report highlighting the experience of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gender people who participate in sport.

In his Herald Sun column Akermanis says an openly gay player could make his teammates uncomfortable and could 'break the fabric of the club'. Akermanis says he's not homophobic, but many footballers are and the sport is not ready for it.

What do you think? While there are openly gay atheletes in some sports, all football codes are considered very 'traditional'. Is sport ready for change?
