Shower bus rolled out for Sydney homeless

Forty of Sydney's homeless people will receive a warm shower and free toiletries each day after the launch of a mobile bathroom service in the city.

A bus converted into a mobile shower will provide some of those sleeping rough on Sydney's streets with a warm wash and free toiletries each day.

The initiative by not-for-profit organisation OneVoice has received $90,000 from the NSW government and from Friday, the bus will travel to homeless hot spots across the city.

The bus is fitted with a 2000 litre water tank which can provide 40 warm showers a day, with OneVoice founder Josh Wilkins saying a similar initiative in Melbourne has been a success with people often emerging "in tears, overcome by the simple joy a warm shower offers".

Family and Community Services Minister Brad Hazzard praised the mobile service but called on corporate Australia to assist with the "entrenched" issue of homelessness.

"We need problem solving innovators and investors to work with us otherwise we will never make a large-scale impact on social issues and the end result affects us all," he said in a statement on Friday.
