Jeremy McGovern had the perfect sounding board before he kicked the biggest goal of his AFL career and the most important goal of West Coast's season.
McGovern's goal after the final siren gave the Eagles a massive four-point win over Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
Just before he took the kick, McGovern had a quick word with teammate Luke Shuey, who kicked the match-winning goal against the Power in last year's elimination final at the same venue.
"I actually knew the siren was about to go - we'd been told at the last centre bounce there was only about 30 seconds to go," Shuey told the Nine Network's Footy Show.
"So I tried to relax the big fella a little bit and had a bit of a smile with him.
"I said something along the lines of 'It's your turn now' but he gave me a bit of a smile back, which I thought was a good sign.
"He went back and kicked it."
McGovern's goal has major ramifications, with the Eagles on the verge of confirming their top-two finish.
Port were left clinging to eighth spot ahead of next week's finals-shaping clash against Collingwood at the MCG, followed by their round-23 home game against Essendon.
West Coast achieved the rare feat of not leading until the last goal of the match.
The win was also a massive morale boost for the Eagles after a tough week.
Star on-baller Andrew Gaff won't play again this season because of his suspension, and his ugly incident with Fremantle opponent Andrew Brayshaw raised questions about West Coast's culture.
"We weren't the victim in the whole situation, there's no doubt about that," Shuey said.
"But it was still an emotional week for us and a big week for Gaffy.
"Andrew Brayshaw is obviously the one hurting the most out of this whole thing, but Gaffy has had a tough week.
"Above everything else, it was nice to win for him."
Gaff is spending time in Melbourne and Shuey is unsure what role the suspended midfielder will have at the Eagles for the rest of the season.
Shuey said Gaff would probably have a coaching role with their midfield group.
"It would be good to have him back around the club in the next week or so," Shuey said.
