Australia's rising superstar Ben Simmons had mixed fortunes yet still led the way as his Louisiana State University fell to a second straight loss in US college basketball.

Simmons missed with his first five shots, finished with just four points and fouled out early in overtime as North Carolina State triumphed 83-72 dropping LSU to a 3-2 season start.

However he also scored the basket off a drive to level the scores at 65-65 in the final minute of regular time and again featured high in team-oriented stats with 14 rebounds, 10 assists, three steals and three blocks.

The 19-year-old's exceptional allround game continued to draw rave reviews from commentators and ESPN reported he was the first division one college player in the past 20 years to have at least 80 points, 70 rebounds and 30 assists in the first five games.
