Simmons stifled on losing LSU side

Australian basketballer Ben Simmons has scored a double-double but his LSU outfit have failed to put up much of a fight against Texas A&M.

Australia's Ben Simmons might be the best player in US college basketball, but his Louisiana State University (LSU) squad have showed again they are far from being one of the elite teams.

Texas A&M, extending a nine-game winning streak, easily defeated LSU 71-57 on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT).

Simmons went into the game in front of more than 13,000 hostile fans at Texas' Reed Arena averaging 20 points and 13 rebounds but he was stifled and frustrated by the more-aggressive Aggies.

The Melbourne-born 19-year-old had 10 points and 11 rebounds, which gave him his 14th double-double for the season.

It was not enough to challenge 10th-ranked Texas A&M.

Simmons only had nine field-goal attempts and connected with just three while Texas A&M guards Jalen Jones and Tyler Davis had 20 and 18 points respectively.

LSU slip to an 11 win-seven loss record and are in danger of missing the end-of-season NCAA tournament, while Texas A&M improved to 16 wins-two losses and confirmed themselves as one of the hottest teams in America.

LSU won eight of their previous 11 games, including a victory over top 10-ranked Kentucky, and only trailed Texas A&M 38-34 at halftime, but the poor second half is a major setback for the team.
