Malcolm Turnbull will host Singapore's prime minister in Canberra during next week's sitting of federal parliament.

During bilateral talks Lee Hsien Loong and the Australian prime minister are expected to discuss issues such as violent extremism in the region, trade, the South China Sea maritime dispute and greater defence engagement.

Last year, Australia and Singapore commemorated 50 years of diplomatic ties with a gift of koalas sent to the island city-state's zoo.
