Sinkholes to be filled near Sydney units

Anxious residents of two evacuated Sydney unit blocks will spend a third night away from their homes as nearby sinkholes are filled in with concrete.

Sinkholes that forced the evacuation of two unit blocks in western Sydney will be filled with concrete overnight.

But there remains no word on when about 50 displaced residents will be able to return to their homes.

The Harris Park blocks were evacuated on Saturday night amid fears they might collapse after large holes spread from a flooded adjoining building site.

The holes continued to grow on Monday but engineers monitoring the site said the buildings had not begun to move.

In an attempt to stabilise the site and prevent further erosion, the owners of one of the unit blocks will arrange for two holes to be filled with concrete overnight, Parramatta council said on Monday evening.

The council's hands are tied when it comes to fixing the problem because it has no right to repair private property, but it earlier flagged legal action should the property owners fail to act.

The council initially had difficulty contacting the owner of the abandoned building site, but claims to have been in touch with a solicitor authorised to act on the owner's behalf.

Residents were allowed to return briefly on Monday to gather belongings but could spend several more days away from home.

"We are doing everything we can to assist them in finding alternate accommodation," Parramatta Mayor Scott Lloyd said in a statement.

"We sympathise with the residents who have been displaced and understand it is incredibly inconvenient."

One neighbour said his friends from one of the evacuated blocks are extremely stressed by the ordeal.

"It's still risky," he said. "If it rains heavy again, what will happen?"
