Six in hospital after Brisbane gas leak

Almost 60 patients, mostly school students, have been treated by paramedics since a gas leak was first reported in Brisbane.

Emergency services have given the all clear after a gas leak hospitalised six school students and shut down parts of northern Brisbane.

Queensland Ambulance spokesman Brendan Ranizowski says almost 60 patients, mostly school students, have been treated by paramedics since the leak was first reported at 9.15am (AEST).

"At this stage we believe it's over as we have seen no escalation of patients presenting," he told reporters.

"However, we do encourage people to call triple zero if they believe they have been affected."

Six students have been taken to hospital for treatment, but their symptoms aren't life-threatening.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) chief superintendent Kevin Walsh said the leak was a stenching agent, which is added to natural gas to give it a strong smell and make it easier to detect.

The agent leaked from business in Bayno, before hitting a primary school and a high school and then drifting into neighbouring areas.

"The actual smell has drifted some six-to-seven kilometres away," he said.
