Six men have spent the night on a remote Torres Strait island after their boat likely broke down, police say.

The men were spotted on a beach on Crab Island by a helicopter search crew at 7.45am (AEST) on Wednesday.

Officers say a patrol boat is on the way to pick up the men, who had set off from Old Mapoon for Seisa, near Bamaga, on Tuesday morning.

It's believed their boat broke down on the way and they were reported missing just after midnight.

"There's some mention of mechanical failure, but we'll have to ask them when we pick them up," a spokesman told AAP.
