Sixers out to spoil party for BBL rivals

The Sydney Sixers are aiming to rattle a few cages in the closing stages of the Big Bash League with their finals hopes dead and buried.

With only pride left to play for, the Sydney Sixers are embracing their role as the Big Bash League's spoilers.

The Sixers notched up their third-straight victory as they dealt the Brisbane Heat's semi-final chances a crushing blow in their nine-wicket win on Thursday at the SCG.

Allrounder Sean Abbott finished with 4-11 as the Heat were bowled out for just 73, the third-lowest total in the competition's history.

Abbott's four-wicket haul against the Heat took him to 13 for the competition, three behind Andrew Tye.

He has a chance to finish the season as the BBL's leading wicket-taker for the second year running, as he chases a return to the Australian T20 side after a three-year absence.

He said he refused to be upset if he was overlooked again and acknowledged there were players in front of him.

"It's whatever the selectors want the balance of their side to be," Abbott said.

"You can't just expect to be in a team even if you perform well. It's up to the selectors how they want their side to look and the country's full of great players. I just keep moving forward to the next game and worrying about the next ball.

"I'm not expecting too much."

After starting the season at 0-6, the Sixers' run of form has been too little, too late.

However, that's not stopping them enjoying rattling some cages and they're planning to do the same in their final match of the season - Tuesday's clash with the Melbourne Stars.

"It's been a tough campaign for us," Abbott said.

"We felt we haven't executed in key stages of matches and let ourselves down at really important times.

"While we've played ourselves out of the finals, we thought we owed it to the crowd who keep turning up here and packing the stadium out and flicking on the TV to watch us play.

"We made a point to come out and enjoy our cricket and get four wins on the board in these last four games and climb on top of some teams on the ladder."
