Sydney Sixers fast bowler Joe Mennie has been re-released from a Brisbane hospital days after suffering minor bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull when he was struck with a ball during training.

Mennie was initially thought to have escaped serious injury after being hit in the head on Monday night at the Gabba.

He was initially hospitalised for observation before being discharged.

But the 28-year-old returned as a precaution after scans revealed the extent of his injuries, Cricket Australia said on Wednesday.

"Whilst this is a serious injury, Joe is feeling well," chief medical officer John Orchard said.

"We believe that this is a stable injury and will not require surgery."

Mennie has since been released and is back at his hotel to cheer on the Sixers as they take on Brisbane Heat in Wednesday's semi-final.

Sixers veteran Brad Haddin described the incident as "scary".

"He was bowling in the nets and (batsman) Michael Lumb got hold of one straight back and he's followed through and got him in the head," Haddin earlier told Sky Sports Radio.

Mennie, who made his Test debut for Australia against South Africa in November, joined the Sixers in April following three summers with Hobart.

He has played just twice for the franchise this season, most recently against the Hurricanes in Sydney on December 23.
