Skateboarder, 13, dies on Melbourne road

A neighbour attempted to apply first aid to a 13-year-old skateboarder hit by a 4WD in Melbourne, but was unable to save him.

A 13-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a four-wheel drive while skateboarding to school in Melbourne .

The teenager was skating on his way to school and had just turned onto Fieldstone Way in Brookfield on Tuesday when he was hit by the 4WD about 8.10am, police say.

The driver stopped but the boy died at the scene.

Resident Neil Craze says he attempted to help the boy at the scene.

"I tried to apply first aid but it was obviously too late and I just waited with him until the police and ambulance arrived," he told the Nine Network.

The teen's parents arrived soon after, with paramedics unable to save the boy.

Police at the scene also reacted emotionally to the tragedy.

"You send your kids off to school in the morning, hoping they get home at night. I'll go home tonight and the first thing I'll do is give my boys a cuddle," Acting Sergeant Dale Murley told Nine.

Neighbours said the boy would be fondly remembered, with the entire street in grief.

Victoria's provisional road toll for 2017 sits at 43, which is 29 fewer than the same time last year.
