Test prop James Slipper will his return from a two-month drug suspension for an Australian Super Rugby selection putting the Wallabies through their paces before the Bledisloe Cup.

The 86-times capped Wallabies forward hasn't played rugby at any level since May when he turned out in a Super Rugby game for the Queensland Reds.

Two weeks later Slipper was issued a two-month ban by Rugby Australia and fined $27,500 after it emerged the 29-year-old had returned a second positive test for cocaine.

The ban expired on July 15 and Slipper was selected in the composite team of Super Rugby, Western Force and Sydney club players for the match against Australia's test side on Friday at Sydney's Leichhardt Oval.

Team coach John Manenti said Skipper, who captained Australia against the United States in 2015, had been working hard on his own and seemed pleasantly surprised by his call-up.

"I just wanted to make sure he was keen and happy to be here and that was very evident in this conversation,' Manenti told AAP.

"I don't think he knows how long he's going to last (on Friday), I know he'll give us everything he can for as long as he can."

Slipper is the most experienced Test player in the squad which will be captained by Melbourne Rebels centre Tom English.

"Coming back, he (Slipper) probably didn't need to be encumbered with the captaincy at the moment, obviously he was an option and he'll be an on-field leader for us without the C next to his name."

Slipper said he was dealing with mental health issues at the time of his drug use.

It's unclear if he will play for Queensland again given coach Brad Thorn's zero-tolerance stance against drugs and he may have to move interstate to maintain his Wallabies' hopes for next year's World Cup.

He is one of four Test forwards in the squad, along with locks Matt Philip and Blake Enever and backrower Richard Hardwick.

Manenti said he had been given a brief for his team to play like the All Blacks, albeit with just two training sessions together.

"Funnily enough in analysing the All Blacks they're actually quite simplistic in how they play, they just do it really well," Manenti said.

Entry is free for the warm-up clash which Cheika has introduced in reaction to their slow start to last year's Bledisloe Cup series.
