Slow over rate adds to West Indies' woes

The West Indies have put on a lackadaisical bowling display in Hobart which included a slow over rate on day one of their Test against Australia.

It's one of the more achievable targets in Test cricket: bowling 90 overs a day.

But it was a challenge too great for the lackadaisical West Indies on day one of their Test opener against Australia in Hobart.

The visitors bowled through an extra 30 minutes available to them after stumps on Thursday and were still an over short as the Aussies went to the sheds at 3-438.

While paceman Shannon Gabriel (1-59) reached bowling speeds of 157km/h, his team's over rate moved at snail's pace and often stretched to beyond six minutes for each set of six.

The lazy over rate came despite slow bowlers Jomel Warrican (2-111) and Jermaine Blackwood (0-25) bowling a combined 28 overs.

But the pace of play was just one aspect of a sloppy West Indies' bowling attack which sent down 11 no balls.

The much-anticipated return to the West Indies' lineup of Jerome Taylor (0-76) fell short of expectation with no repeat performance of his blazing 6-47 against Australia in Jamaica in June.

The right-arm quick opened the bowling on Thursday with a no ball.

After landing on the green Hobart pitch his foot slid several lengths past the line as the ball left his hand.

Kemar Roach (0-64) then started with a no ball from Bellerive's southern end.

Roach's first spell lasted just four overs and he didn't return until the closing stages of the second session.

Gabriel did not bowl in the final session after experiencing pain in his left ankle and will go for scans after play.
