Small retailers have responded to calls from Harvey Norman boss Gerry Harvey for support, and are refusing to back down in the escalating consumer war over GST-free online sales.

The National Retail Association on Sunday joined the Retail Coalition, which has sparked controversy with its push against offshore web shopping.

Representing more than three thousand small shops, it maintains it's time the federal government lifted its GST exemption on goods under one thousand dollars bought from foreign online stores.

Big retailers including Harvey Norman are waging a campaign against the loophole and the association says the Australian community will pay an escalating price for the exemption from job losses.

Director Gary Black says it explicitly favours overseas retailers ahead of those back home.
