Smallest, oldest boat a Syd-Hob winner

Sean Langman has completed another successful Sydney to Hobart, a divisional winner in the smallest and oldest boat in the fleet, Maluka of Kermandie.

The superstitious say it's bad luck to sail the Sydney to Hobart in a boat measuring less than your age, but Sean Langman has again found success on his 30-foot sloop.

Maluka of Kermandie on Friday was the fourth last boat to cross the finish line but won its division, shaving about half a day off its previous best time.

"It's the fastest time she's done, under four days," 54-year-old Langman said after mooring at Constitution Dock.

"It wasn't the most comfortable, which sounds ridiculous given there was so much downwind, but driving this boat downwind isn't easy - you're on your toes quite a bit."

Also impacting the comfort was squeezing six crew on the relatively tiny Tasmanian timber boat which dates back to 1932 and was the smallest and oldest in the race fleet.

And a double up with names just added confusion to the mix.

"We've got two Seans and two Petes," Langman said of his crew which included son Peter.

When battling the waves the crew use codenames, the skipper admitted.

"But I'm not going to tell you (what they are)," Langman joked.

Reaching speeds of up to 13 knots and completing 240 nautical miles in one day, Maluka completed the race in three days, 19 hours, 38 minutes and seven seconds.

It was more than double the time of line honours winner, Australian supermaxi Perpetual LOYAL, which finished early on Tuesday smashing the previous race record by almost five hours.

Second-across-the-line New Zealand boat Giacomo was named overall winner, the Volvo 70-class yacht claiming the Tattersall's Cup.
