Steve Smith has chalked up an Indian Premier League win over his Test deputy David Warner, with the Rising Pune Supergiants thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad in a rain-affected match.

The comfortable victory, by 34 runs and secured via the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain set in with the Supergiants on 3-94, ends a four-game losing streak for Smith's men who claimed just their second win of the season on the back of his composed 46 off 36.

The Test captain proved a calm hand as he guided Pune, with help from South African star Faf du Plessis (30 off 21), to within 25 runs of the modest target of 119 before rain intervened in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Warner, who entered the match in superb form having thrashed three consecutive half centuries, was dismissed for a duck as the Sunrisers struggled to 8-118 thanks primarily to fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan's 56 off 53.

But it proved no great challenge for Smith and du Plessis, who set the rain-affected victory up by adding 80 for the second wicket before Australian allrounder Moises Henriques had the South African T20 skipper caught behind.

"We did not expect this result," Warner admitted.

"We made them look good with the ball. We lost wickets in clumps, so it's tough to build momentum."
