Steve Smith's 17th Test century was far from his most memorable.

But the Australian skipper's unbeaten 100 on day four of the Boxing Day Test ticked some significant boxes and again showed his determination to lead from the front.

The hard-fought dig took Smith past 1000 runs in a calendar year for the third time in a row, an outstanding achievement considering Australia's recent struggles in Sri Lanka and at home against South Africa.

Smith's 17 Test centuries have come in 90 innings, making him the fourth-fastest batsman to reach that milestone.

It's a deeply impressive record but as far as Smith's concerned, it's nothing to get too excited about.

"That's my job, isn't it," he said on Thursday.

"I want to lead from the front with my performances.

"We've been through some tough times and some losses there but we've obviously won five games straight as an Australian team (including ODIs).

"It's nice to have contributed in those games as well but hopefully we can keep improving as a team and getting better."

While many batsmen can only dream of raising the bat during a Boxing Day Test, Smith has now done so three years in a row.

He will have the chance to add more runs on day five against Pakistan, with play halted due to rain just two balls after he reached his ton on Thursday.
