Smith, Lee well placed in LPGA Ann Arbor

Australian golfers Sarah Jane Smith and Minjee Lee are within reach of the leaders at the Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor.

Australian Sarah Jane Smith has shot a first-round five-under 67 to sit within sight of the lead at the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Smith is in a five-way tie for fourth, two shots behind leaders Stacy Lewis and Wei-Ling Hsu.

Fellow Australian Minjee Lee was a shot behind Smith in a share of ninth position at Travis Pointe Country Club on Thursday.

World no.84 Smith started strongly with a birdie at the first hole.

She had five more birdies with a bogey at the seven her only blemish for the round.

American Lewis fired a seven-under 65 to share the first-round lead with unexpected challenger Hsu of Taiwan.

Hsu eagled two of her first five holes and was six under through six.

She and Lewis finished a stroke ahead of LPGA rookie Nelly Korda.

Lewis, a former world No. 1, is winless in 72 events since June 2014.

She has 11 LPGA Tour victories and 25 second-place finishes - 12 since her last win.
