Australia are expected to lean on the steadying influence of Steve Smith as skipper as they seek to shore up their tilt at Twenty20 World Cup glory.
Chairman of selectors Rod Marsh will reveal Australia's 15-man World Cup squad on Tuesday, with Smith set to be named captain in place of Aaron Finch.
Finch was appointed T20 skipper in late 2014, when Smith's stocks were only starting to skyrocket.
Finch, who averages 34 and holds the world record for the highest T20 international score - 156, has done a serviceable job in his six games at the helm.
But it's understood selectors want the nation's sharpest cricket brain in charge for their T20 World Cup campaign, which starts on March 18 in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala.
Smith led the T20 side in their only match of 2015, a clash with England in Cardiff.
The 26-year-old was rested from two of the three games in the recent home T20 series against India, during which Finch tweaked his hamstring.
Shane Watson was named captain in Finch's absence at the SCG, scoring an unbeaten 124.
"The Australia captain for the ICC World Twenty20 in India in March will be named when the squad is announced," a Cricket Australia spokesperson said at the time.
CA were unwilling to comment on Monday about any element of the 15-man squad.
Marsh admitted last month that his panel had considered promoting Smith as T20 captain.
"Those things are always considered but at the moment Aaron is doing the job and doing it nicely," Marsh said then.
Finch and James Faulkner are both recovering from hamstring injuries, with the latter likely to be named in the World Cup squad.
Finch, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, George Bailey, Travis Head and Chris Lynn are scrapping for two batting berths in the squad.
Watson started the 2015-16 Big Bash League (BBL) inconsistently but impressed with bat and ball against India, all but confirming he will be granted an international swansong.
Selectors have also been impressed with John Hastings' recent form and the Victorian is likely to be in the 15-man squad alongside fellow allrounder Mitch Marsh.
Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade all loom as automatic selections.
Spinners Nathan Lyon, Cameron Boyce and Adam Zampa are in a tight battle for two spots in the touring party, with Lyon and Boyce the frontrunners to get the nod.
The pace attack will be led by Josh Hazlewood but his support cast is far from clear.
Andrew Tye, Shaun Tait, James Pattinson, Kane Richardson and Nathan Coulter-Nile are in the mix.
However, Richardson and Coulter-Nile are both under injury clouds while Pattinson failed to play a single game in the recent BBL season because of sore shins.
Australia travel to South Africa for a three-match T20 series before they attempt to win the one major piece of silverware that has so far proven elusive.
Potential Twenty20 World Cup squad: Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Shane Watson, Steve Smith (capt), Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade, James Faulkner, John Hastings, Cameron Boyce, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Andrew Tye, James Pattinson, Aaron Finch.
