Adelaide's All Australian defender Brodie Smith has signed a three-year contract extension with the AFL club.

Smith will miss the majority of the 2018 season following knee reconstruction surgery after being injured in last year's finals campaign.

But the Crows are so confident in the 2014 All Australian making a full recovery, they have re-signed him until the end of the 2021 season.

"It has been a difficult off-season for me with the knee reconstruction but to be able to agree to a new deal is both comforting and exciting," Smith said in a statement on Thursday.

"I couldn't imagine playing football anywhere else and I will be doing everything I can to get back out on the park with my teammates as quickly as I can."

Adelaide's list manager Justin Reid described the 26-year-old as "one of the most damaging running defenders in the competition."

"Over the last few years, we have really seen him grow as both a player and a leader within the group," Reid said in a statement.

"He has approached his rehabilitation with a fantastic attitude."

Adelaide recruited Smith with pick No.14 in the 2010 national draft and he has played 143 AFL games.
