More than 2000 Smurf fans painted blue and dressed in costume gathered in southern German village of Lauchringen, hoping to break the Guinness World Record for the largest meeting of people in Smurf costume.
Organisers said there were exactly 2762 people dressed like the famous cartoon characters. All of them had to cover all traces of skin in blue paint, and don the signature curved hat.
The Record Institute for Germany confirmed the group has the numbers to break the world record, but the Guinness World Record has not yet given the final seal of approval.

The comic series centres around a fictional society of blue elves. The cartoon characters have spawned books, television shows, movies and video games.
The previous record for the largest meeting of people dressed as Smurfs was set 10 years ago by a group of students in Wales. In 2009, 2510 participants took part in the record-breaking attempt.
