Snapshot for day 4 of the third Test

South Africa have taken a 2-1 series lead, thumping Australia by 322 runs in a Test that will be forever remembered for Steve Smith's attempt to cheat.

AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA, DAY 4

* SCORE: South Africa 311 & 373, Australia 255 & 107

* MAN OF THE MOMENT: Tim Paine. Was asked to captain Australia after Steve Smith and David Warner stood down from their leadership posts on the morning of play. The level-headed keeper is expected to formally become the nation's 46th Test captain in Johannesburg, where he faces all manner of challenges.

* KEY MOMENT: David Warner calls Cameron Bancroft through for a quick single. Faf du Plessis responds with cat-like reflexes, throwing down the stumps. It's the first wicket to fall in a shocking collapse of 10-50 that spans 99 minutes.

* STAT OF THE DAY: A 322-run win is the emphatic margin in a Test at Newlands, in terms of runs. The previous mark was England's 312-run triumph in 1957.

* SUMMARY: South Africa have taken a 2-1 series lead. They are incredibly well placed to finally record their first home Test series win over Australia since the fall of apartheid.

* QUOTE OF THE DAY: "They're not great. It's been a horrible 24 hours, they're struggling" - PAINE describes Smith and Bancroft's state of mind after they copped a torrent of abuse from back home.
