SNAPSHOT FROM DAY THREE AT THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Frances Tiafoe - American tennis's so-called next big thing kissed his biceps in delight after flexing his title credentials with a 4-6 6-4 6-4 7-5 second-round win over South African fifth seed Kevin Anderson in the shock of the men's Open so far.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It is so surreal. That was just such a blur but all I know is I left it all out there." - new Aussie sensation Kimberly Birrell after continuing her cracking start to the season with a 6-4 4-6 6-1 upset win over Croatian seed Donna Vekic.

STAT OF THE DAY: Roger Federer's 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory over Brit Dan Evans earned the ageless Swiss great his 96th win at Melbourne Park, eclipsing his 95 at Wimbledon.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Anderson aside, Federer's main challengers in the men's bottom half of the draw marched on, including last year's runner-up Marin Cilic, Russian 10th seed Karen Khachanov and Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas. Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, former 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens and Aussie hope Ashleigh Barty all progressed to the last 32 of the women's draw.
