Snapshot of day 1 of the second Test

A snapshot for day one of the second cricket Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at Canberra's Manuka Oval.

AUSTRALIA v SRI LANKA DAY 1

Score: Australia 4-384

Men of the moment: Opener Joe Burns, unbeaten on 172, crafted the first Test century by Australian this summer while new vice-captain Travis Head (161) cemented his future in the middle order with his maiden Test hundred.

Key moment: Australian captain Tim Paine winning just his second coin toss in nine attempts. He had no hesitation in batting on a flat Canberra pitch.

Stat of the day: - It's been almost 13 years since a South Australian had scored a Test century. The last man to do it before Travis Head? Jason Gillespie in Bangladesh.

Summary: Australia were shaky early as an inexperienced Sri Lankan bowling attack reduced the home side to 3-28 in the first hour of play. But Head immediately looked settled at the crease and the left-hander capitalised with Burns to put on a record 308-run partnership. Sri Lanka's poor fielding cost them dearly, with four chances going down.
