Snapshot of round 14 of the NRL

All the talking points from round 13 of the NRL.

WHAT HAPPENED IN ROUND 14 OF THE NRL:

* QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "There's no way that could be a penalty try, there's no way you could guarantee he was going to score that. Five minutes before that, Jordan Kahu nearly gets his head taken off and the ref says, 'No, around the shoulders'." North Queensland coach Paul Green fumes after Michael Chee-Kam was awarded a penalty try in the Wests Tigers' 27-26 win over the Cowboys.

* STAT THAT MATTERS: With Sam Burgess (shoulder) and Tom Burgess (ankle) already out and George Burgess (virus) a late scratching, South Sydney's 19-18 loss to Penrith was their first game without a Burgess brother since round eight, 2012.

* MAGIC MOMENT: After Cody Walker missed an attempt at one-point, James Maloney booted a clutch 20 metre field goal to give Penrith a thrilling win over South Sydney.

* TALKING POINT: Melbourne are the new team to beat just over halfway through the season after they opened up a four-point lead at the top of the ladder over South Sydney and the Roosters.

* MAN OF THE ROUND: Tom Trbojevic, in what was his second game back from injury, erased any doubts about his hamstring, running for 333 metres, scoring one try, setting up another and having a hand in a third.

* JUDICIARY WATCH: Cronulla - Andrew Fifita (dangerous contact - head/neck), Warriors - Adam Blair (dangerous contact - other), Newcastle - Mitchell Barnett (dangerous contact - head/neck).

* CASUALTY WARD: Canberra - Nick Cotric (ankle); Gold Coast - Tyrone Peachey (pec), Jai Arrow (ankle); Brisbane - Payne Haas (hamstring); Newcastle - Mitchell Pearce (hip/groin); Manly - Api Koroisau (ankle).

* UNDER PRESSURE: NSW coach Brad Fittler has rolled the dice, ringing in seven changes to his side for State of Origin II including sensationally dropping Latrell Mitchell.
