Snapshot of Wallabies' win over Wales

Australia have tackled their way to a famous victory over Wales, winning 15-9 in a memorable tryless encounter.

Result: Australia 15-6 Wales

What it means: Australia remains undefeated and tops Pool A, opening up an easier path to the World Cup final. They now go to the "softer" side of the draw and avoid South Africa and New Zealand until a potential final.

Key moment: The seven-minute period in the second half when Australia, defending with 13 men after losing Will Genia and Dean Mumm to the sin bin, repelled wave after wave of Welsh attack. On three occasions Wales were held up over the tryline as the Wallabies refused to buckle.

Wallabies best: Ben McCalman only played half an hour, but he was immense in the win. His try-saver on George North potentially saved the match, but he was also effective with ball in hand and at the breakdown. Full marks to Adam Ashley-Cooper's terrific all-round game as well.

Quote of the day: "We made some mistakes and we've got so much improvement, but for our courage and the way we put our bodies on the line to defend, I'm very proud of the lads." Michael Cheika on the Wallabies' victory.

What's next? Australia prepare for a quarter-final with Scotland at Twickenham next Sunday (Monday AEDT), but will nervously wait for updates on the fitness of star duo David Pocock (calf) and Israel Folau (ankle). Wales have the more difficult task of South Africa on Saturday
