Snorkeller dies off central Queensland

A snorkeller has died after being swept out to see off the central Queensland coast.

A man has died while snorkelling with his wife on the Great Barrier Reef.

A rescue helicopter was deployed to look for the man, who was swept out to sea near Heron Island off central Queensland on Thursday morning.

Senior Sergeant Jeff Barnett said the man and his wife had been swimming around the wreck of HMAS Protector.

"He appeared to struggle in the tide and the alarm was raised when he couldn't be seen by his wife swimming back from the wreck area," Snr Sgt Barnett told reporters on Thursday afternoon.

Rescuers found the man and he was taken to the beach on Heron Island before paramedics arrived.

He was given CPR but died at the scene.
