Snow athletes, Matildas win AIS awards

After a big season on the snow and strong performances on the pitch Australian winter athletes and the Matildas have dominated the AIS awards.

Australia's winter athletes and the Matildas were the big winners at the AIS Sport Performance Awards in Sydney on Tuesday night.

With the Winter Olympics less than two months away, the Australian snow sports athletes enjoyed a boost with three awards.

Snowboarder Scotty James, who is looking to become his country's first men's medallist in the snowboard halfpipe, took out the Male Athlete of the Year award.

After their best World Cup season in 2016/17 where they picked up 35 medals and a further five at the world championships, the Australian Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard team won team of the year.

And to round things out on the snow Mitch Gourley, who won the gold medal in the men's super combined standing at the 2017 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Italy, claimed para performance of the year.

Superstar striker Sam Kerr was awarded ABC Sports Personality of the Year, an award voted on by the Australian public while her Matildas team won, Public Choice Team of the Year.

Alen Stajcic was recognised by an AIS panel of experts as Coach of the Year.

Other winners included Olympic gold medallist and hurdler Sally Pearson for Female Athlete of the Year following her comeback world championship victory in the 100m hurdles in London.

Young track cyclist Kelland O'Brien was named Emerging Athlete of the Year as a prominent member of Australia's Men's Track Pursuit team.
