Snow falls as Melbourne shivers below 10C

It's winter in Melbourne, exactly as we know it, according to Bureau of Meteorology manager Ted Williams.

Snow has fallen near Lorne and Ballarat as Melbourne shivers through one of its coldest June days in 20 years.

Melbourne's temperature briefly sat in double digits, peaking at 10.7C just before 1.30pm, but is expected to drop sharply once the city is hit by a wintry cold front.

That front has already crossed western Victoria where snow has fallen below 500 metres in places including the hills overlooking Lorne.

The organisers of Falls Festival posted video footage online of the festival grounds at Erskine Falls blanketed in white.

"Surf or snowboard?" Surf Coast resident David Rae asked on Instagram.

Sprinkles of snow and sleet have also been reported at Mount Macedon, Ballarat and in the Dandenongs.

Melbourne had been forecast to record its coldest June day since 1998 before the mercury edged into double digits.

After the cold front crosses the state and heads into NSW, Victorians will get little respite with a high bringing icy mornings and widespread frost.

Melbourne is expecting a maximum of 13C on Saturday and 12C on Sunday. Overnight lows will be 5C and 4C respectively.

The mercury won't head higher again until Tuesday when 14C is forecast for the city.

But don't say this winter is any colder than normal.

"So far this winter has been similar to previous winters," the Bureau of Meteorology's Ted Williams said on Friday.

"This is just the first burst of cold air for the winter."
