Socceroos captain Jedinak set to miss starting spot in World Cup opener

Australian captain Mile Jedinak appears to have lost his bid for a starting spot against France in Saturday's FIFA World Cup opener in Russia.

Jedinak has been withdrawn from Friday's official pre-game media conference in Kazan, replaced by teammate Mathew Leckie.

Under FIFA rules, a player from the starting line-up must attend the official match-eve media conference, indicating Jedinak won't start against the French.

Jedinak, who has been Australia's captain since May 2014, didn't start in the Socceroos' two most recent friendly fixtures prior to the Cup.

The 33-year-old came from the bench and played the second half in Australia's 2-1 win against Hungary on June 10 in Budapest.

He was also an unused substitute in the Socceroos' 4-0 triumph against the Czech Republic in Austria on June 1 - he was rested after coming into Australia's camp sore from his English season with Aston Villa.

Coach Bert van Marwijk preferred to deploy Massimo Luongo and Aaron Mooy in the midfield roles previously filled by Jedinak.

And the scratching of Jedinak from the media conference indicates van Marwijk will again use the duo as starting midfielders on Saturday against France in Kazan.
