Soil expert meets flooded SA farmers

Vegetable farmers recovering from South Australia's recent wild weather will receive advice from a soil expert on protecting their crops from disease.

South Australian vegetable farmers whose crops have been ravaged by floods will get advice on knocking their soil back into shape.

Soil scientist Doris Blaesing will meet with farmers in Mount Barker and along the Gawler River on Tuesday to offer advice on protecting their sodden crops from disease.

Grower body AUSVEG said the Tasmanian Dr Blaesing will help farmers prevent SA's recent wild weather from hampering their crops for years.

"It is a critical time for vegetable growers to put the appropriate procedures in place to restore the health of their soils and maximise the productivity of future crops," SA state manager Jordan Brooke-Barnett said.

The state government last week made 300 grants of $10,000 available to farmers along the Gawler River, matching the number thought affected by the recent storms and floods that followed.

A task force has also been set up to assist flood-affected businesses across the state with their longer-term recovery.
