Global energy company Nest plans to build one of Tasmania's biggest solar power plants at Launceston, the state government says.

Making the announcement on Thursday, Treasurer Peter Gutwein said the energy produced would initially benefit businesses based at the city's old wool store site.

"The flow-on benefits of this investment are significant. It will create around 14 jobs during design and construction and will provide significant cost savings to (nearby) business tenants," Mr Gutwein said.
