A man has been charged with murdering his mother days after his sister found her body inside a Melbourne home.

Socrates Tamvakis, 44, was charged on Friday with the murder of 74-year-old Violet Tamvakis, police say.

He faced an out-of-session hearing at Moorabbin Police Station on Friday evening.

Ms Tamvakis' body was discovered after the alarm was raised when she failed to pick up her grandchildren from school on Tuesday afternoon.

One of her daughters found Ms Tamvakis' body in a front room of her Bentleigh home, the victim of a violent assault.
