Psychiatric assessments will be prepared for Cy Walsh after he pleaded not guilty because of mental incompetence to the murder of his father, former Adelaide AFL coach Phil Walsh.

The 27-year-old entered his plea through his lawyer in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday and was committed to appear in the Supreme Court on February 1.

Clean shaven and dressed in a green jumper, he made no comment during the brief appearance but seemed to follow the proceedings, appearing via video link.

Prosecutor Lucy Boord said expert analysis had been received in relation to toxicology tests conducted on Walsh's hair but a test for one drug was still under way.

"Forensic Science SA is testing for it now, and we intend to put all that fresh information before the Supreme Court," Ms Boord said

Independent psychiatric reports will also be tendered to the Supreme Court to determine the issue of mental incompetence.

Depending on the details of those reports, the court could find Walsh not guilty of murder because of mental incompetence and could also rule that the objective elements of the crime had been proved.

In such circumstances it will then consider setting a limiting term of supervised detention under mental health provisions.

In an earlier court appearance the possibility was raised of Walsh experiencing a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the alleged murder at the family's Adelaide home in July.

Phil Walsh, 55, died from multiple stab wounds, while his wife Meredith was taken to hospital and treated for a leg injury.

His death shocked the AFL world as well as the wider community, coming during his first season with the Crows after stints coaching at other AFL clubs.
