Melbourne Stars skipper John Hastings apologised to fans after the dismal showing against the Sydney Sixers that officially ruled his side out of BBL finals contention.
A Nic Maddinson half-century and a three-wicket haul to Nathan Lyon were the highlights of an emphatic eight-wicket win on Tuesday night in front of 26,130 fans at the MCG.
Melbourne's star-studded green team are anchored to the bottom of the table with one win from seven games and will miss the finals for the first time after six appearances in succession.
"We are a very proud club and we're doing everything possible to try to turn it around," Hastings said.
"These performances we've been putting together haven't been good enough. We do have a very strong member and fan base so apologies to them."

The Sixers - with a 1-6 record - were already out of the finals race before the clash, but they dominated the home side in every department.
The Stars have struggled to find regular contributors with bat or ball in a disappointing campaign, which Hastings admits will spark a thorough review of their playing list.
Even his own position as skipper will be scrutinised after a baptism of fire in his first season in the role.
"I'd like to have another crack at it ... whether or not that's going to be the case I'm not too sure," he said.
"I suppose everything will come under the microscope once the season's over because we haven't done as well as we would have liked.
"We haven't won (a title) over the last seven seasons now, it's disappointing so we'll have to have a hard look."
The Stars' next match is against the Sydney Thunder at the MCG on Saturday night.
