Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten isn't about to get embroiled in Western Australia's Labor leadership battle.

Former federal minister Stephen Smith has made a pitch for the leadership of the WA Labor party over incumbent Opposition Leader Mark McGowan, exactly one year out from the state's election.

"I'm not inclined to get involved in this matter. I do expect Western Australian State Labor to sort this matter out very quickly," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.
