South Africa bent on historic sweep

South Africa won't stop at a Test series victory, the tourists want to demoralise Australia on home soil with a three-nil clean sweep.

South Africa are determined to sink the boot deeper into badly-shaken Australia by inflicting the ultimate humiliation - an historic Test series whitewash on home soil.

Fresh from clinching the series 2-0 with an innings-and-80-runs second Test victory in Hobart, Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis was already planning to twist the knife in the final match of the three-Test series in Adelaide next week.

Never in the history of the sport has Australia been whitewashed in a Test series at home.

"That's the mission for us now, we want to do that very badly," said du Plessis.

"We won't just rest on our laurels and be happy with 2-1 and even 2-0.

"We've got Australia in a position where they're under pressure and won't let that go.

"It's hard enough to get them in this position so we'll do everything we can to keep them there."

Despite missing their regular captain and superstar batsman AB de Villiers and losing pace spearhead Dale Steyne, who suffered a series-ending shoulder injury early in the first Test at the WACA, the tourists have dominated their hosts with ruthless efficiency.

Citing past struggles on the road, du Plessis said the tour had given the South Africans great confidence for their future.

"We watched on TV for so many years how hard it was for South Africa to come here and do well," he said.

"I suppose the younger guys that are looking from back here right now can see that it's possible, coming here and to an extent dominating an Australian team."

The skipper described the series result as special.

"This is something that we'll remember forever as a team and that's exactly what we came here to do.

"We want to create memories as a team together.

"We've done it a few times now but it's not done yet."

The Adelaide day-night Test starts on Thursday week.
