A candidate for the South Australian election, Paul Collier has died of a brain haemorrhage.

A candidate for the South Australian election has died.

Disability advocate Paul Collier died in hospital on Tuesday night after suffering a brain haemorrhage last weekend.

Dr Collier, 46, was a candidate for the state's upper house at the March 20 election, representing the Dignity for Disablility Party. The party was formerly known as Dignity 4 Disabled.

He became a public advocate for the disabled after being made a quadriplegic in a road accident on the way to his 21st birthday.

Australian Greens MLC Mark Parnell described Dr Collier as a "passionate advocate" for the disabled.

"Paul used his considerable talents to make sure that disability issues were not ignored, particularly during election times," Mr Parnell said in a statement on Wednesday.

"As a candidate he made sure that all parties knew what was needed by way of improved policies and services for the large number of people who live with or care for those with disabilities.

"Right up until he was struck down, Paul was busy meeting with and lobbying future decision makers in his customary cheery but persuasive manner."
