Southern Stars belt Ireland at World T20

Australia have banked a seven-wicket win over Ireland at the women's World Twenty20, now they must hope New Zealand do them a favour.

The Southern Stars have crushed Ireland at the World Twenty20, now they must sit back and start cheering for New Zealand.

Australia's bid for a fourth straight T20 title remains in the balance despite a polished display in New Delhi on Saturday.

They restricted Ireland to 7-91 then hauled in the target in 13.2 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Meg Lanning's side are currently second on the group A table after beating Ireland, Sri Lanka and South Africa in the group stage.

But if South Africa topple both NZ and Sri Lanka they will also finish with three wins and likely advance to the semi-finals ahead of Australia on net run-rate.

"We wait and see now. Hoping New Zealand can beat South Africa (on Saturday night) and that takes us through," captain Lanning said.

"We just play the waiting game now."

Ireland, who finished the tournament without a victory, briefly threatened to cause a boilover after losing the toss.

Clare Shillington and Cecelia Joyce belted Australia's attack, powering their side to 0-33 in the fifth over.

Megan Schutt, who grabbed figures of 3-29 to be named player of the match, created the initial breakthrough when Shillington popped up a catch to Beth Mooney at mid-off.

Legspinner Kristen Beams and left-arm tweaker Jess Jonassen both recorded miserly figures of 0-14 from four overs.

"Our bowlers really set the tone early. They certainly got away in the powerplay but I thought we dragged it back really nicely," Lanning said.

The run-chase didn't go completely to plan.

Opener Alyssa Healy missed out on a big score for the fourth match in a row, falling victim to a sensational one-handed catch from captain Isobel Joyce.

Lanning, who scored 126 runs from 65 balls against Ireland at the 2014 World T20, also failed to cash in.

The skipper was furious after being clean bowled on eight, having attempted to pull a delivery from Kim Garth that kept low.

But Elyse Villani and Ellyse Perry shared a 54-run stand.

Villani, who top-scored with 43, went down swinging at right-armer Garth but Perry brought up the winning runs and finished 29 not out.
