Nelson Mandela lived in Soweto for more than 40 years. Locals there are now preparing for a flood of sympathetic visitors, if their beloved leader loses his long battle with a lung infection.

Many around the country are praying for the ailing former South African statesman as he battles with a recurring lung infection, which saw him admitted to hospital in Pretoria more than two weeks ago.

The manager of the Mandela Family Restaurant says she feels sad at the prospect of losing Mandela, whom she described as an “icon” and a “smiling person”.

Visitors have also started descending to Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum wanting to learn more about Mandela and South Africa's struggle.

"It might well grow into a must-know subject in terms of new generations learning about the past," says Apartheid Museum Manager Christopher Till.
