Spanish firm to build Aust waste plant

Spanish firm Sacyr says it will build a plant in Melbourne to convert organic waste into high quality manure.

Spanish firm Sacyr, that builds and manages infrastructure and services, has announced it will be building a plant in Melbourne to convert organic waste into high quality manure.

The head of Sacyr Industrial Australia, Miguel Heras, told EFE that the technology - which is already present in Europe and the US - would be introduced in Australia for the first time to treat some 120,000 tonnes of food and yard waste.

The South Eastern Organics Processing Facility, expected to become operational in 2019, would convert organic waste from eight municipalities of Melbourne into 50,000 tonnes of high quality manure per year.

Australia's Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said in a statement that the project, expected to cost $A65 million, could reduce CO2 emissions by more than 65,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to removing 14,000 vehicles off the roads.
